Elliptic Works has extended the internet of things towards underwater, using our patented technology for Underwater Visible Light Communications (VLC).

The internet has expanded markets and solutions everywhere it has traveled. Now, it is time for the Pools and Spa industry. Elliptic Works conducted a high-impact research activity to evaluate the potential of Underwater VLC for sensors, lights, pumps, robots, and other submerged pool devices. The grand challenge addressed by Elliptic Works is to introduce the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and cloud services to the pool industry.

Introducing wireless connectivity between underwater devices will enable a new type of digital pools, providing efficient, scalable and profitable business to the pool industry. Our proof-of-concept is complete, and our patents are filed. Now, we are going to challenge the entire swimming pool industry: Starting with the US market by releasing a new generation of products and services.

With Elliptic Works’ ground breaking VLC software and technology, we have the ability to communicate to and from everything underwater easily, effectively and inexpensively, and the swimming pool industry will forever be changed for the better.

VLC offers advantages over Radio Frequency (RF) transmission: Light can offer significantly greater range in water. The opportunity to send data in this manner has largely arisen because of the widespread use of LEDs in today’s consumer products.

Our technical approach is different to alternative solutions such as IEEE 802.11bb Li-Fi, or IEEE 802.15.7, as we use an industry grade firmware-based solution, using only off-the-shelf electronic components. However, we envision that our solutions, which are optimized for underwater scenarios, might later find their way into a global IEEE 802 standard in the future, adding to the impact of our solutions.
